Creeping red fescue grows best in cool shady areas, and it flourishes at higher altitudes and in the midwestern and northeastern USA. It is a perfect grass for transitional and cool growing zones, and it can grow well in neutral, slightly alkaline and slightly acidic soils. Red Fescue needs well drained soils with moderate moisture, and while it has a low tolerance to heat it may grow in semi-hot climates as long as it is under shade and well irrigated.
Red fescue is a low maintenance grass in its preferred cool / shady climate. The grass has moderate watering and fertilization requirements, and in some areas it may survive well with little care. In hotter climates the grass will need a little extra care with closer attention paid to watering and fertilization application.
Creeping red fescue looks lovely at any height , but homeowners may want to keep the grass at between 1.5 to 2.5 inches for a more presentable lawn. The thin bladed grass should not be mowed to heights of less than 1.5 inches or it may take on a thin appearance. While red fescue can hold up to some traffic, its thin blades will look their best when tread on lightly.
