The Fan Duct is a primary reason why people who modify their case are called case modders. The fan duct came into being to address one need: Your case is too hot, and you need to install a fan up front. Many steel cases have either no fan in front or they have a small 60mm fan. So you decide to take out that 60mm fan and rig up a nice 80mm or 92mm fan in the front of the case. Thats where the problem starts. You need a wind tunnel. And thats where the fan duct comes in.

To install a fan duct, you have to cut a hole straight through your front bezel to the fan. Then, you measure the distance from the fan to the case front. You use a saw to cut through the plastic duct and make it the right length to provide the perfect wind tunnel, from the case front to the case interior.

Needless to say, fan ducts are only used by case modders with no fear of tools. Install one, and you'll see your case temperatures drop nicely.

We have also seen people use fan ducts on the sides of their case, to focus the wind tunnel directly on the processor.

This fan duct can be used with either 80mm or 92mm fans - there is only 12mm difference between the two, and this duct spans the gap quite nicely.
