Miss Julie (1999) is a period drama directed by Mike Figgis, adapted from August Strindberg's 1888 play. Set on Midsummer's Eve in 1894 Sweden, the film stars Saffron Burrows as Miss Julie, an aristocratic young woman, and Peter Mullan as Jean, her father's footman. As the night unfolds, Julie and Jean engage in a tense and passionate power struggle, challenging the rigid class boundaries that separate them. Their interactions reveal deep-seated desires and societal constraints, leading to a dramatic conclusion. The film also features Maria Doyle Kennedy as Christine, the cook and Jean's fiancée. Figgis employs innovative cinematic techniques to explore themes of class, power and forbidden desire.
